William was born about 1773 probably in or near Kirtlington and became a burcher. Two earlier butchers both named William Young lived and worked in Kirtlington but the relationship to this William, if any, is not known.
William married Frances BAYLIS in Kirtlington when he was 33 and they baptised eight children at Kirtlington between 1807 and 1826 while William continued as a butcher in the village. Around 1851 they moved for a short while to the neighbouring parish of Bletchingdon, but were back in Kirtlington by 1861.
They both lived to old age, William died in 1862 aged 89; Frances died in 1875 aged 93. They were buried in the same grave in Kirtlington churchyard where their gravestone still stands. Their unmarried son John became a butcher like his father and lived with them throughout their lives.

According to the 51 and 61 census, William was born in 1772 or 1773 in Kirtlington. His death certificate and burial register age gives a birth year of 1774. The 41 census gives a birth range of 1781-86 and it seems likely to be in error by 10 years (ie age should be 65 not 55); his gravestone gives an age 5 years greater than his death certificate, giving a birth year of 1769. The most reliable estimate then is c1773. There are only two possible baptisms at Kirtlington:

It seems certain that the first William died, as there is a suitable burial at Kirtlington. The second William could be William-5 but there is a second William burial just 10 weeks after this baptism, and it is possible that this William died also.

The mother, Dorothy, died in 1812; she was comparatively wealthy, and her will mentions two daughters Elizabeth and Mary, and Mary's natural son William. Her eldest son Richard died before her. She had another son Thomas not mentioned in her will and he may also have died before her, as there are Thomas YOUNG burials at Kirtlington in 1782 and 1791. The failure to mention William or his children is not conclusive but the name Dorothy does not occur in William's descendants. It seems probable therefore that Dorothy’s son, William, was buried in 1777 and is not William 5
On the other hand, Thomas’ grandfather (1667-1740) and brother (1733-1811) were both named William, and were both butchers of Kirtlington (as shown by various documents relating to land leases etc shown below). It seems reasonable to suppose that William-5, succeeding them as a butcher of Kirtlington, was related in some way (see Kirtlington Tree)
The first William was a man of property as he was involved in numerous land leases from 1701 to 1728. He died in 1740, and in his will he left everything to Thomas & Ann YOUNG and their children Thomas & William (no relationship was stated in the will, but a document of 1744 proves that these children were his grandsons). The grandson William was the second butcher, also a man of property involved in known land transactions from 1758 to 1789.
Thomas' daughter Mary had an illegitemate son William Young who, is almost certainly the farmer William who appears in the 1841 and 1851 census with Hannah BAYLISS as his servant. Hannah is the sister of Frances who married William-5. Both Hannah and Frances came from the rather distant parish of Tysoe in Warwick. However this does not prove a family connection between the two William YOUNG's. Hannah was the younger, and perhaps Frances obtained her servant's position for her; or perhaps they both came to Kirtlington as servants, but only Frances married. A witness at the m of William-5 to Frances was W YOUNG which might be farmer William, Mary’s illegitimate son.
The origin of William-5 cannot yet be decided. There are other William Young's born in nearby parishes but they cannot be tied to the Kirtlington William
Thomas YOUNG-4 was baptised at Kirtlington in 1812, son of William & Ann. This baptism however occurs in a 5 year gap in a series of baptisms to William & Frances. There are no other references to William & Ann in the register, and no suitable William/Ann marriage, whereas the baptisms to William and Frances are preceded by a marriage. Moreover, Thomas-4 and his new bride Rebecca were living with William and Frances, together with their other children in the 1841 census. Thomas' marriage certificate shows that his father, William, was a butcher and the William married to Frances was also a butcher. The register for Kirtlington is missing and baptism data is from the Bishops Transcript. It is concluded that the baptismal entry has a transcription error of Ann for Frances, and that the marriage of William is recorded in the BT with Frances:
